City, State: San Francisco, California Website: http://www.RussLorenson.com Comments: Hi all, I just want to relate a funny, "small world" story of something that happened to me over the weekend. My hubby and I had decided to take the ferry from San Francisco up to Sausalito, and went down to the Ferry Building here in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon. When we got there, the usual Saturday Farmer's Market was going on, even though it was raining a bit. Since the weather was bad, we decided to skip the ferry, and just wander through the Farmer's Market and inside the refurbished Ferry Building, which now houses all sorts of gourmet shops. I stopped to buy a gelato at the Italian ice cream store, and while I was standing there munching away, right in front of me passes this very sweet older couple, holding hands like young lovers, which just touched my heart to no end. I watched them for a bit as I followed behind them, and both they and I stopped at a gourmet olive oil shop. As I was standing there, I got a glimpse of the lady's face and thought, "No, it couldn't be!" I leaned in a little to hear the voice just to be sure, and it most certainly was none other than Carol Channing, along with her husband Harry Kullijian! I hesitated to interrupt their afternoon, but I just knew that if I didn't say hello, Richard Skipper would fly to California to slap me in person, LOL! So, I approached Harry and apologized for interrupting their day, and told them that I was sure Richard Skipper would never forgive me if I didn't say hello. Well, you should have seen their faces light up like Christmas trees at the mention of Richard's name! Carol was so excited that I knew Richard, and she quizzed me about his new show, and whether I had seen it, etc. I told her I had, and that I LOVED it, and that it was one of the most loving tributes I had ever seen anyone do. I also told her about the part of the show where Richard takes questions from the audience as Carol, and told her how delightful he is when interacting with the audience - she was just thrilled! Well, I'll spare you the rest of the details, but we stood there and spoke for 25 minutes and she couldn't have been any sweeter than if she were Richard Skipper himself playing her, LOL! What a wonderful, sweet couple they are - married just 4 years ago, after being junior high school sweethearts 70 years ago. When I told them that I first noticed them because they were holding hands, Carol actually blushed like, well, a schoolgirl, and said she hadn't realized that they were doing that. I sure hope I'm still holding my sweetheart's hand when I'm 86! Anyhoo, thought I'd pass this story on to you all - hope it brings a smile to your face, as it has to mine! Hugs to all- Russ Lorenson
City, State: Pompton Lakes, NJ Comments: On April 14th I get to see yet another outstanding, amazing and entertaining performance by Carol at the Musicians' Hall in NYC. It was certainly not my first performance and it is most definitely not my last.

Richard Skipper, aka Carol Channing, takes complete command of an audience and handles any situation with quick-witted charm. The diamonds(aka rhinestones) may be faux, but the show is fabulous -- and the warmth is genuine! City, State: New York, NY Website: www.roblangeder.com Comments: I have been a fan and friend for so long that I sometimes take for granted how talented Richard Skipper is. Well, he gave us all a big reminder at a recent performance! With his back up singer dashing off the stage – having been suddenly struck ill – Richard, as Carol Channing, bravely carried on and actually made the comedic most of a potentially awkward situation. He really knows how to think on his feet, that one! But even more admirable, to me, is the great love and care he takes in channeling Ms. Channing. He held me positively mesmerized as he performed the “Ephraim, Let Me Go” monologue from Hello, Dolly! before launching into a breathtaking rendition of “Before The Parade Passes By.” During those times, I felt like Richard completely disappeared and he was absolutely possessed by the spirit of Carol Channing! In that sense, Richard Skipper works the best kind of theatrical magic! Bravo, Richard! |
