Well, I finally saw Richard Skipper's "Carol Channing" show this past Sunday at the Wings, and I was very impressed. Although I'd read his fine notices, they did not prepare me for the loving tribute that he pays Carol Channing.
I saw Carol Channing in DOLLY many times - the first just a week or so after the NY Opening.
I also saw her in LORELEI at the Palace.
In Las Vegas, at the Riviera or Caesar's - can't recall, in her one-woman show.
In Rochester, in TEN STOUT HEARTED MEN at the Eastman Theatre
In Rochester, in DOLLY at the Auditorium Theatre
In Washington, in the last- pre-broadway engagement of DOLLY.
I will never forget having had a ticket to see her in SHOW GIRL at the O'Neill in NYC many many years ago (I was a kid) but there was a blizzard that day and I couldn’t get a train into the city.
Anyway- I just posted on ALL THAT CHAT about this show and I hope you have big crowds for your next performances.
Best wishes,
Marty

A good friend invited me to go to the show last Thursday and I agreed, albeit with a bit of reluctance. I didn't expect much but thought it might be mildly entertaining.
Sister/Brother was I wrong! RICHARD SKIPPER'S "CAROL CHANNING" TRIBUTE IS SUPERB I had one of the most enjoyable evenings at the theater that I have ever had. The ease with which it was carried off belies the incredible amount of work that must have gone into every detail. This was more than an homage, it was as if - for that evening - Carol inhabited Richard Skipper's body. His vocals, his walk, his facial expressions, his repartee with the audience and his interaction with his cute and very talented boys - choral and orchestral - were all on the mark. Thank you for a wonderful, witty evening that I will not forget.

CAROL CHANNING IN CONCERT is a very entertaining evening, with Richard showing off the best of his many talents. Richard is probably more Carol Channing then even Carol Channing is these days, all done with warmth, sincerity and true admiration of a great theater talent. Richard adds new material from the Carol catalog he has developed over the years. It was a joy to hear "Jazz Baby" from THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, and "Blondes", special material from LAUGH IN, plus a wonderful gem, "Widow's Weeds" by Ervin Drake. Now if Richard would only pair this song with my very favorite, but very obscure, Channing song, "This Is a Darned Nice Funeral" from Channing's 1961 SHOW GIRL. Richard/Carol is assisted by a 3 piece band and three attractive, accomplished young men, all under the fine direction of Miles Phillips.
My only complaint, since the Wings Theater has no concession stand, I'd have shaved a few minutes off from Act One, dropped the intermission, and just given the audience 90 minutes of nonstop pleasure!!

My wife and I found Richard Skipper's "Carol Channing" show entertaining, relaxing and gave us a smile for the day. Besides enjoying Richard's acting ability, we also broadened our knowledge about the wonderful actress and singer --Carol Channing. We wish him much success in his next adventure on stage.
