City, State: Teaneck, NJ Comments: Last night at Helen's Hideaway Room in Chelsea, Richard Skipper brought us into the presence of none other than the fabulous Carol Channing in his cabaret show "Carol Channing in Concert." For the price of one cover charge we got to see not one, but two stars - the incomparable "Carol" Channing and the incredible Richard Skipper. The tribute of Ms. Channing by Mr. Skipper was so unbelievably transparent that it was hard to tell where one performer ended and the other began. This show is obviously a labor of love. From the moment "Carol" steps onto the stage, you find yourself captivated by this uncanny transformation. Every vocal sound, every speech inflection, every nuanced movement and gaze are her. As "Carol" takes the audience through the songs, tales and highlights of her extraordinary career, they are joyously in the presence of an unforgettable star. The warmth, intelligence, humor and talent of this exceptional performer (or should I say performers?) shines through the entire production. By the final "Hello, Dolly!" segment of the show, with "Carol" dressed from head to toe in "Dolly's" finery, the illusion is complete. You've long since forgotten that your watching Richard Skipper as one of our greatest female stars. You're watching Carol Channing, youthful and vibrant as ever. Since the real Carol Channing appears so infrequently, especially in the NYC area, how lucky we are to have her lovingly brought to life on stage by the phenomenal Mr. Richard Skipper. Bravo, Richard! Bravo, Carol! It's so nice to have you here where you belong.
City, State: new york Website: www.christinelavin.com Comments: I brought a friend to see the show tonight, and he was late, got there just as the lights were going down, so I didn't have a chance to explain to him what we were seeing, (though I really didn't think it was necessary). He's a lawyer, not a show biz person, and I could tell he was enthralled by the show because he thought it really was Carol Channing. We were maybe 12 feet from the stage and at one point whispered to me "How did you get these tickets so close? She's still amazing!!" That's when I realized how completely Richard embodies the legend, and now I'm sorry that on the way out I told him that was Richard Skipper playing Carol Channing. My friend was dumbfounded and sort of embarrassed because he was completely fooled. If I were to do it over again I wouldn't have told him because he loved the show so much, and thought he was seeing the real deal. On second thought, he was seeing the real deal. It's no wonder Carol Channing loves this show so much.
City, State: New York, New York Website: www.glennfischer.info Comments: I've seen celebrity look-a-likes and impersonations before and I didn't arrive in a UFO yesterday, so I can't be fooled! I don't know where Richard Skipper was during the performance tonight, but OBVIOUSLY the REAL Carol Channing performed and was pretending to be Richard Skipper posing as Carol Channing. (Somewhat reminiscent of Victor/Victoria) The voice, the mannerisms, the dramatic monologue, the songs,in fact, the entire experience was incredible. I am so lucky to have actually seen the real deal. I hope Richard is okay wherever he is, but thanks Carol for stepping in and performing a phenomenal concert for your fans. The entire evening was great and the band and back up singers made Cabaret magic. Thank you to all of you....and give my best to Richard. I'll catch his act next time!
City, State: Rockland County, New York Website: www.parrasite.homestead.com Comments: In recent years, there have been three shows during which I sat with a huge, cheek-cramping grin from start to finish – they were “The Producers,” “The Drowsy Chaperone”, and Richard Skipper’s “CAROL CHANNING IN CONCERT.” The audience for a recent June performance of “CCinC” was totally captivated, including myself, my wife, and my octogenarian mother-in-law. The charming and witty interaction of Carol (during the show it’s impossible to think of the performer as Richard) with the audience itself is worth the price of admission. Carol is ably backed up by a chorus of three personable male vocalists and the lively Paul Stephan Group. Richard Skipper’s Carol Channing goes far beyond simple mimicry. Richard so truly evokes and eerily inhabits the essence of Channing that, as you hum Carol’s tunes on the way home, you need to remind yourself that you’ve just seen an unparalleled performance by Richard Skipper. Throw away your preconceptions, and go have a good time at “CAROL CHANNING IN CONCERT”!
City, State: New York Website: http://www.dottieburman.com Comments: I finally got to see Richard Skipper's new extravaganza, "Carol Channing in Concert" and what a concert it is, with a 5 piece band and 3 cute,talented backup singers who add and don't detract from Richard's brilliant take on Carol.The fun, opening film montage of Carol Channing definitely also helps to make this show ready for Off-Broadway or Vegas. Not to worry, Richard/Carol still improvises with the audience and as always it's hilarious. What, you haven't gone yet? Last show of this run is July 5th at 9:30 p.m. at Helen's.
