City, State: New York, NY Comments: Normally, club performances evoking known personalities are not my bag, but I am happy to report this Carol Channing Tribute is every bit as charming and funny as one would expect from Carol Elaine herself. Through your own genrosity and talent you allow her shine and collect all the accolades. It was amazing to be reminded how small focused moments can fill a room just as much as the oversized styles of some of Carol's contemporaries. I attended the 6-15-06 performance at Helen's Hide-Away Room with a "non-theater" friend who knew of Carol, but not particularly in her iconic caliber. You have put an end to all that and earned her (and yourself) a new fan. Hearty Congratulations!
City, State: Baltimore, MD Comments: Rich, you won't remember this, it was a very long time ago, but in August of 2000 (I think it was a Saturday night 8:00 show) I treated my mother Fran to your show at Don't Tell Mama. We sat in the front center table, right underneath you, and she was the only other lady in the place. You made a point of including her in practically every routine you did. To this day, she continues to talk about how special you made her feel, how beautiful, and how glad to be human and alive(she doesn't exactly get that kind of treatment from my father a lot of the time, unfortunately!). So glad you're getting the kind of recognition that a talent like you deserves. Because you aren't just a great performer -- you are a great example for the rest of us of what all people ought to be. Wise, kind, warm, sane, humorous and adventurous. Necessary qualities for survival in the increasingly disorganized and unkind times in which we live, and you help lead the way in making the world better. City, State: Union, NJ Comments: It was a thrill to hear and watch Richard Skipper as Carol Channing at Helen's on 6-15-06. He becomes Carol Channing and the audience forgets that he isn't. The show definitely belongs on Broadway. Richard Skipper is great as Carol Channing because he is great as Richard Skipper.
City, State: Metuchen, NJ Website: www.MichaelColby.com Comments: I was thrilled to attend last night. David Blaine could not have pulled as buoyant a return act as did Richard Skipper in his show. His is not so much a caricature or an impersonation as an embodiment of a show business legend.
City, State: NYC Comments: Just wanted to share a note w/you altho' Lee Roy Reams may have already done so. We were both at Helen's in Chelsea last nite for Richard Skipper's pre-theater try-out of "An Evening with Carol Channing." Everything went smoothly from the opening film and video clips of Carol thru-out her career - a bold move for any impressionist to follow - and then Richard/Carol appeared,fabulous as always. Afterwards, LeeRoy told Richard that he particularly admired his interpretation of Dolly Levi's monologue to her late husband Ephraim - high praise indeed from a man who certainly should know!!!! |
